Dewey Rudolph Alexander, Sr.

April 11, 1952 — April 3, 2025

Dewey Rudolph Alexander, Sr., a beloved son, father, brother, and cherished friend, passed away on April 3, 2025, in his hometown of Lynchburg, Virginia, just days shy of his 73rd birthday. Born on April 11, 1952, he grew up in a vibrant community where he became the life of every gathering, all with his huge smile and infectious laughter.

A proud graduate of Dunbar High School, class of 1970, Dewey showcased his athleticism on the basketball court and the football field. His passion for sports extended beyond his youth; he remained a devoted fan of the Las Vegas Raiders throughout his life, celebrating their victories and sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends. He also received an Associates Degree in Business Management.

Dewey served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His military service shaped him in profound ways, and while he shared many stories about his experiences and the friends he made during that time, there were some memories he found too painful to revisit. This bravery and willingness to protect others defined his character long after the war had ended.

Dewey would never be caught out unkept. He had a huge love for fashion and received the many compliments with a smile. He also took pride in working as a CNA. Dewey’s kind heart and love for children was expressed with his yearly donations to St. Jude.

Above all, Dewey was known for his immense love for his family. He was the proud father of Tomika Alexander (Jason) and Dewey Alexander, Jr. "DJ" (LaKeshia). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Jamik Alexander, Tomia Alexander, Akilah Banks-Alexander, Khadja Alexander, and Sa'sha Alexander, as well as his great-grandchildren, Wyatt Ferguson and Kari Alexander. Dewey’s pride in his grandchildren was unmatched, as he celebrated their milestones with joyous enthusiasm, encouraging them in every endeavor.

He leaves behind his baby brother Roger Alexander (Felda), who was often mistaken as being Dewey. One aunt, Elaine Wright, one uncle, Paul Alexander, Sr., one brother-in-law, Ernest Bolding, along with countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who will carry forward his spirit, remembering him as a lively individual with a free spirit.

Dewey was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Hudson, his mother, Gladys Alexander, and his sisters Dorothy Bolding, Nadine Alexander, and newborn twins who he stated were too beautiful to live.

As we reflect on Dewey Rudolph Alexander, Sr., we remember not just the military man or the sports fan, but the pillar of joy he was in the hearts of his loved ones. His big smile will be greatly missed but remain cherished in the memories of those who had the privilege to know him.
