Donald Clayton Anderson

“FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS”  DONALD CLAYTON ANDERSON passed away quietly at his home in the company of his beloved wife, Diana, to whom he was married for over 65 years.

Mr. Anderson, a native of Brockton, MA, was the son of Gustave and Ruth Meurling Anderson and stepson of Eric Daniel Wallin following the untimely death of his father.  He graduated from Brockton High School (MA) and continued his education at Upsala College, East Orange (NJ) and Fairleigh Dickinson University, Rutherford (NJ) earning a Master’s degree in Business Administration in 1960 with honors.

Mr. Anderson and his wife, Diana, were married in 1955 and became residents of Brockton.  He worked at Century Paper Company, Boston (MA) until he accepted a position at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (NY).  He left Pratt to become Assistant to the Comptroller of Upsala College and remained there until 1960.  That year, after receiving his Master’s degree, he accepted the position of Assistant Business Manager of Bennett College in Millbrook (NY).  In 1962 he was appointed to the position of Director of Business Affairs at Wheaton College, Norton (MA) and in a few years was given the title of Vice President for Business and Finance.

While working at Wheaton College, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson resided in Avon where he was a member of the Town of Avon Finance Committee as well as the School Building Committee. They later took up residence in Hollyhock House on the Wheaton campus.

The Andersons moved to Centreville, MA (Cape Cod) in the late ‘70s.  When he was a child Mr. Anderson spent many summers on Cape Cod, and he and his wife, Diana, who also loves the Cape, spent a great deal of time visiting every summer and on weekends when they resided in Norton.  While they were living on the Cape Mr. Anderson served as Comptroller of IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare) in Yarmouth Port and also taught part-time at the Cape Cod Community College in Barnstable.

In 1979 they moved to Lynchburg (VA) when he was appointed Treasurer and Business Manager at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (now Randolph College).  He then joined and retired from Southern Virginia University, Buena Vista.

Mr. Anderson was elected a Corporator of the Taunton Savings Bank and was a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers, Southern Association of College and University Business Officers, College and University Personnel Association, and Southeastern Association for Cooperation in Higher Education in Massachusetts (SACHEM) and the National Association of Accountants.

Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were members of the First Lutheran Church of Brockton and also attended the First Lutheran Church of Barnstable when visiting the Cape.  In Lynchburg they attended services at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a niece, Karen Anderson Kohler, John, of Leominster (MA), and a nephew, Wayne Shelton Anderson and his wife, Susan, of Ocala (FL).  His brother, Lawrence W. Anderson, and his sister, Dorothy Wallin Boynton, predeceased him.

Also, on his wife’s side of the family, he leaves seven nieces and nephews and eighteen grandnieces and grandnephews.

He will be remembered as a dedicated professional, an honest and ethical man who had the gift of making all with whom he came in contact feel comfortable and important.  Above all, he was a loving and caring man, who will be greatly missed by his wife and family, and his friends.

The family is grateful for the loving care provided by the staff at Westminster Canterbury.
