Doris Louise Graves Anthony, 92, formerly of Lynchburg, VA died peacefully June 12,2014 at her home in Phenix, VA. She was surrounded by two of her loving caregivers and her daughter, Laura. Mrs. Anthony was the daughter of the late Florence Virginia Glass Graves and David Lafayette Graves, and was born April 28, 1922 in Lynchburg, VA. She was educated in Lynchburg Public Schools and worked at the Lynchburg Gas Company. After marriage to the late Ralph Burton Anthony, she devoted her life to raising her children and her many interests.
Mrs. Anthony was active in the Lynchburg Arts Club, where she had many of her watercolors displayed. She loved to needlepoint and sharing her works of art with family and friends. Going to the movies and having lunch with her friends were two of her favorite activities. Her quiet time was spent reading, studying her Bible and enjoying her feline friends. There are many of her children’s friends who have fond memories of her kind, sweet, gentle personality.
Mrs. Anthony was also an active member of the Lynchburg Woman’s Club and Oakwood Country Club before she moved to Phenix where she was closer to Laura. She was also a member of Centenary United Methodist Church for over 50 years.
Mrs. Anthony was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Ralph Burton Anthony and an infant daughter, Anna Laurie Anthony. She is survived by her four children and their spouses : Virginia Susan and Darrell of Frederick, MD; Ralph David and Susan of Jacksonville, FL; Anne Burton and Christopher of Charlotte, NC; Laura Graves and James R. of Phenix, VA. She is also survived by 7 loving grandchildren and a sister, Martha Virginia (Peggy) Allen of Glen Allen, VA.
The family would like to thank Mrs. Anthony’s special caregivers, Linda Lipscomb and Cheryl Swint, for their loving care and devotion of Mama. Others involved in her care were Shanna Weeks and Jessica Royster to whom the family is very grateful.
A memorial service will be held in Phenix, VA at Phenix United Methodist Church on Saturday June 28, 2014 at 2 pm. Donations may be sent in her memory to the church or a charity of your choice.
