Doris M. Merkey Smith

Doris M. Merkey Smith, age 93, passed away on August 20, 2017 at her home in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She is the widow of Calvin Walter “Dick” Smith and was the daughter of Clyde A. Merkey and Sophia Berry.

Doris is survived by her loving and caring daughter and son-in-law, Diane and William “Bill” Elliott of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a son Donald Gallagher of Dahlonega, Ga. Surviving Doris are a sister Norma Purvis, and brothers Carlton David Merkey (Lola) of Madison Heights, Gerald Merkey (Lois) of Lynchburg, and Weldon Merkey (Pat) of Severn, Md. Doris is also survived by two special grandchildren, Bobby Lee Rigsby of Madison Heights, and Karen Hammer (Ted) of Dahlonega, Ga. In addition there are one great-granddaughter and two great-great-grandchildren. Doris also is survived by a loving and caring nephew Roger Murphy (Ruth) of Goode, Va.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on August 23, 2017 at the Tharp Funeral Home in Madison Heights, Va. A graveside service and burial will be at 10 a.m. on August 24, 2017 in the family cemetery in Concord, Va.
