Doris Meade Ray Handy, 95, of Lynchburg, formerly of Bedford, passed away at Westminster Canterbury on Tuesday, December 29, 2015. Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Dr. Douglas Quentin Handy, to whom she was devoted.

Born in Sanford, North Carolina on May 28, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Alba Waite Ray and Thelma Blake Ray.  She attended Siler City, N.C. public schools and then went on to Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. She was a long-time member of Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Bedford, where she worshipped and served faithfully until recent years when her health and distance prevented her from being as active.  She was also a faithful member of P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter AR since 1979.

Doris is survived by her cousins: James H. Ray and wife, Jewel, and Josephine Snipes and husband, Aubrey; sisters in law: Barbara and Eleanor Handy; and 16 nieces and nephews.  She was a gracious lady who endeared herself to many with her gentleness, kindness, and wit.  Doris was a lover of all things “North Carolina” especially the Tar Heels and barbeque.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boys Home of Virginia, 414 Boys Home Road. Covington, VA 24426, or Saint John’s Episcopal Church, 314 N. Bridge Street Bedford, VA 24523.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 2, 2016 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bedford at 11:00 a.m. conducted by The Rev. F. Wilson Brown. The family will receive visitors following the service at the church. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery before the service at 10:00 a.m.
