Dorothy Allen Wood Riner left her earthly life to be with Jesus on Sunday evening, September 20, 2015. She has now been freed from the many years of the heartbreaking ravages of Alzheimer’s disease. Mom now rests in the loving arms of her Savior and is reunited with the love of her life Lt. E. Curtis Riner of the Virginia State Police and her only son, Roger Curtis Riner. Mom – “Go Rest High on That Mountain.”
Dorothy leaves behind to mourn her loss her daughter, Kathryn Leigh Riner Baer and spouse, Michael K. Thaxton; her only grandchild, Michelle Baer Gray and her spouse Billy Gray; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Dylan Gray; her sister, Elizabeth “Libby” Wood Maupin of Charlottesville, Va.
Dorothy was predeceased by her siblings, Lewis Wood, Malcolm Wood, Carroll Wood, Ray Wood Jr., Grace Wood Hensley and Gladys Wood Ballard; her son-in-law, Edward A. Baer.
Mom was born on January 12, 1922 to the late Ray Otto and Mattie Stribling Wood in Charlottesville. She was raised on a farm with all her siblings in a loving, Christian home. After her marriage to Curtis, the couple moved to the Rivermont Section of Lynchburg, Va. They later moved to Fort Hill where they raised their two children. Dorothy was primarily a stay at home Mom that was very active in her children’s lives including being the Den Mother to the local Boy Scouts. Mom and Dad joined, and were active in, West Lynchburg Baptist Church almost 60 years ago.
Dorothy’s family would like to express their appreciation to all the staff at Valley View Assisted Living, Heritage Green, Runk & Pratt and Seven Hills Hospice for taking loving care of Mom for the last few years.
At Mom’s request there will be no funeral services. The family will have visitation at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg on Sunday September 27, 2015 from 3 to 5 p.m.
