Dorothy Elizabeth DeShazo 91, of Bedford, VA. died Friday, August 12, 2016. She was born in Orlando, Fla. January 29, 1925, daughter of the late George M. Overstreet and Dessa Burnett Overstreet. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Tazewell DeShazo, Jr. of Roanoke, VA.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters; Deborah DeShazo and Dianne Fain of Bedford; grandson, Israel Fain; granddaughter, Amanda Kimsey and husband, David; great grandchildren, Jaylyn and Braxton Fain; and brother, Lewis Crawford “Bud” Overstreet and wife, Virginia.
Dorothy “Dot” was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church of Bedford. She served her church as elder, member of Women of the Church, and in charge of floral arrangements for many years.
She was a graduate of Longwood College and was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. Majoring in english and history, she taught these subjects at Moneta High School in 1947. She taught in Pine Bluff School system for many years. Dot was active in various clubs, serving as President of Bedford Garden Club.
Dot was a resident of English Meadows for the past year and a half, until discharge to her home with Centra Hospice. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff for the wonderful care she received.
The family will receive friends and family from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m on Sunday August 14, 2016 at the residence ( 544 Westview Ave. Bedford, VA). Dot will be at Tharp Funeral Home for those that would like to pay respects.
Graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Monday, August 15, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. John Salley and Rev. Francis B. Avery. Music provided by Buford Overstreet, Dot’s cousin.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Bedford Presbyterian Church.
