Dorothy “Dot” M. Garrett
Dorothy \"Dot\" Markham Garrett, Lynchburg, died October 9, 2013, at Heritage Green Assisted Living. She was the wife of the late Nelson Nicholas Garrett for 45 years. Born on February 4, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Gracie Markham.
Dot was preceded in death by five brothers: Hayden, Arnold, Allen, Arthur and Dillard Markham; and three sisters: Isabel Fromm, Audrey Saunders, and Mildred Doss. Dot is survived by her loving family, two daughters: Betty Minnick and husband, Larry; Gwen Wardia, and husband, John; son, Roger Garrett and wife, Donna; and a brother, Stuart Markham; and nine grandchildren: Rev. Nate Garrett and wife, Debbie; Rev. Israel Garrett; Isaiah Garrett and wife Beka; Tiffany Tomlinson; Tabitha Smith and husband, Norm; Tasha Garrett, Melinda Minnick Bledsoe and husband, Adam; Bryon Minnick and Helen Francis Garber ;nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dot loved the Lord and she always enjoyed telling people about Jesus, and preparing meals for her family and friends. Dot was a faithful member of Old Forest Road Baptist Church for many years, and prior to her vision problems, she performed many duties for the church; including teaching Sunday school and ministering to the shut-ins. Then several years ago, she felt led to Keystone Baptist Church where she also found a loving place to worship her Lord.
Dot had a \"green thumb\" and loved working in her flower and vegetable gardens; and she was a great cook.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30p.m., Friday, October 11, 2013, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, and other times, at the home of her daughter, Betty, 1057 Hidden Creek Way, Forest, VA. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 12th, at 10:00 a.m., in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Fort Hill Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to Keystone Baptist Church Building Fund, 212 Fleetwood Drive Lynchburg, VA 24502.
