Dorothy Jane Lewis, 85, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, October 23, 2013. She was the beloved wife of Leonard John Lewis.
Dorothy was born October 17, 1928 in Cincinnati, OH; the daughter of Willard Lewis Portteus and Mae Elizabeth Portteus. She was a retired administrative assistant at Babcock and Wilcox, a much-loved resident of The Carrington in Lynchburg, and an active member of Lakewood Baptist Church.
She was the loving mother of four children, Nancy Peterson and husband, David of Forest, Kenneth Lewis and wife, Laura, of Brookline, MA, Deborah Neighbors and husband, Michael, of Forest, and John Lewis and wife, Sharon, of Blacksburg. She is also survived by two brothers, William Portteus and wife, Shirley, and George Porttus and wife, Carole. Dorothy cherished her nine grandchildren, Joshua Neighbors (Rebecca), Megan Neighbors, Shiho Durham (Gregory), Bethany and Eric Peterson, and Justin, Kayla, Nathan, and Samantha Lewis; and her great-grandchild, Zoey Grace Neighbors.
In addition to her husband, Leonard John Lewis, Dorothy was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Jane.
Her family would like to thank Dr. David Smith, her longtime family physician along with cardiologists, Dr. Christopher Lewis and Dr. Richard Kuk. The family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, stories, and support from those who knew Dorothy well.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Lakewood Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Manley officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
