Dorothy Marie Hale Karnes, 93, of Bedford, died Sunday, November 23, 2014 in Oakwood Health & Rehab Center. She was born March 28, 1921 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late William Carey Hale and Nannie Driskoll Witt Hale.
For many years, she worked at Craddock & Terry Shoe Factory in Lynchburg, the Silk Mill in Bedford, and later to retire from Elk City Dress Co. in Bedford. Dorothy was known for her friendliness and helpfulness to everyone. She adored her “special” nieces and nephews and she especially looked forward to the annual Karnes reunions.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Swanson Karnes; two sisters, Clara Hale Lee and Pearl Hale Massie; and a brother, Carlton L. Hale. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Ann Wilson; Elizabeth Hale Everidge; and one brother, C. Goggin Hale; and four sisters-in-law, Lorene Johnson Hale, Rebecca Karnes, Estelle Karnes, and Offie Karnes.

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be conducted at 2 PM, Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. David L. Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
