Dorothy Wilson Byers, 88, of Big Island, died on the evening of Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Dorothy went home to be with the Lord after a struggle with a stroke, surrounded by her loving family. Born September 27, 1926 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Robert Lewis and Pearl Perrow Wilson.
Dorothy was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church where she enjoyed being a choir member. In addition to her love for the Lord, her church and family, she enjoyed cooking meals for her family, and she loved flowers.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Melvin Byers; one daughter, Betty Byers Blanks; two brothers, Jesse Wilson and Houston Wilson; three sisters, Addie Goff, Ida Goff, and Ruth Robertson. She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis Martin (Roger) of Appomattox, Rita Baity (Paul) of Florida, and Bonnie Childress (Terry) of Lynchburg; three sons, Frank Byers, Jr. (Shelby), Randy Byers (Cheryl) and Ronnie Byers (Lisa) all of Big Island; a son –in-law, Gerald Blanks of Spout Spring; twelve grandchildren, Duane Blanks, David Blanks, Dorothy Phillips, Roger Martin Jr., Dennis Martin, Marsha Morris, Monica Falls, Matthew Byers, Heather Wolf, Spring Burks, Shannon Byers, and Brian Byers; one step granddaughter, Jamie Lowman; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; 8 great great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be conducted at 11 AM, Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Carey C. Snellings officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Dorothy always made everyone welcome in her home by offering them food and we would like to ask that all donations of food be brought to the church fellowship hall for a reception following the service. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Friday, April 24, 2015 at Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford and all other times at Dorothy’s home. Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford, is assisting the family.
