Douglas Dewey Shelton, Jr., 94, of Lynchburg, died peacefully in his sleep Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg.
Born Sunday, July 8, 1923 in Danville, Va., Douglas was a son of late Douglas Dewey Shelton, Sr. and Gladys Cox Shelton.
In addition to his parents, Douglas was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Mary Riding Shelton and a sister Ann Tuck and her husband, John.
Douglas is survived by his sons, Paul Shelton and his wife, Barbara, of Evington, and James D. Shelton and his companion, Michelle, of Louisville, Ky.; step daughter, Stephanie Pearson and her husband, Michael, of Danville; and three grandchildren, Paula, Carly and Christopher.
Douglas graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in 1939 and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, studying Mechanical Engineering. He then enlisted in the US Merchant Marine in 1943 as a commissioned officer and was assigned to convoy duty for the duration of the War in the North Atlantic. He returned to VPI after the war to finish his Mechanical Engineering degree in 1946. Douglas remained in the US Merchant Marine as a Chief Engineer until his retirement in 1986. He received the rank of Captain in the US Navy reserve. Douglas was also a licensed pilot.
A celebration of Douglas’s life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Westminster Canterbury with Rev. Kristie Miles officiating.
