Doyce (Sonny) Mayhew

Saturday, April 16, 2011, Sonny\"™s presence was blessed to be standing with his personal Savior, Jesus Christ. After a long illness, his physical being died at his home in his beloved Ivy Hills.

He leaves in the warmth of his love, Linda, his high school sweetheart and wife of 54 years; two special children, Tony Mayhew (Angela) of Gray, TN and Carolyn O\"™Loughlin (Chris) of Mineral, VA; five wonderful grandchildren, Michael Mayhew (Jackie) of Prospect, Cole Mayhew (Bettie), Candice Mayhew (BJ), Nick Mayhew, and Dani Mayhew, all of Lynchburg; plus five precious great grandchildren, Jolie Mayhew, Jake Mayhew, Jackson Mayhew, Bailey Mayhew and Will Mayhew. Also, he would want his special relatives and friends to be remembered as well.

Sonny was born March 10, 1934 in Lynchburg to Rawley C. Mayhew and Helen O. Mayhew Taylor. Fishing and hunting were a big part of Sonny\"™s growing up. He loved baseball and was a pretty good pitcher for Brookville High School. He enjoyed bowling and football, especially following the Packers (who won the Super Bowl this year!). But his most avid sport was golf. He was a member of Ivy Hill Golf Club, although he appreciated the times he spent on any golf course.

Sonny was a veteran of the Virginia National Guard and the US Army. He was also a Mason, and member of the Edward A. Eubank Lodge. He retired from General Electric to enjoy his family and living at Ivy Hills. He acquired so many friends over the years that delighted in his company, especially his sense of humor. He had the opportunity to travel to many foreign countries and was very steadfast in his political views.

Please join us in a celebration of his life at Beulah Baptist Church, Lynchburg on Thursday, April 21 at noon. After the service the family will meet with relatives and friends and share great memories.

Memorial contributions may be sent to your favorite charity.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family, (434) 237-9424.
