Dr. Calvin Sampson Garrett, Sr., 85, of Madison Heights, VA, departed this life and went to his heavenly home on June 28, 2013.

Calvin was born August 1, 1927 in Amherst County, the son of the late John Cleveland Garrett and Allie Palmateer Garrett. He was a hardworking, respected man whose life of work started on the family farm as a child. He graduated from Madison Heights High School and Lynchburg College followed by the Medical College of Virginia where he met his beloved wife. Calvin served as a surgeon in the United States Army from 1956 \"" 1958. After completing his residency at Norfolk General, Calvin returned to Lynchburg to begin his medical practice. He retired in 1977 \"" ready to enjoy his life, family and home, \"Dixie on the James\". In 2009, Calvin published his memoirs, Goin\"™ Home \"" Rags To Riches And Back. He was a long-standing member of Union Christian Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing bridge and poker.

Calvin is survived by his \"beautiful red-head\", JoAnn Lawson Garrett, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. He also leaves to cherish his memory four sons: Calvin Sampson Garrett, Jr. and Doris Dagman of Charlottesville, Dr. Thomas \"Scott\" Garrett and his wife, Whitney Eanes Garrett, Charles Conrad Garrett and his wife, Sharon Creasy Garrett, Richard Randolph Garrett and his wife, Ann Wilkins Garrett, all of Lynchburg; six grandchildren: Rachel Garrett Phillips and her husband, Thomas Phillips, Richard \"Daniel\" Garrett and Fiona Dunne, Jessica Ann Garrett, Samantha Garrett Baldwin and her husband, Michael Baldwin, Tyler Lawson and Haley Gray Garrett; six great-grandchildren: Micah and Madilynne Phillips and Rebecca, Jonathon, Sarah and Savannah Baldwin. He is also survived by one brother: Preston Duval Garrett and his wife, Judy Wright Garrett, many special friends, extended family and his faithful \"dawg\", Missy.

He was preceded in death by one sister: Lucille Garrett Boyd and two brothers: John \"Wilson\" Garrett and his wife Clara Ewers Garrett and Owen Aubrey Garrett.

Calvin leaves us with these words taken from his memoirs: \"As I lie in peaceful slumber, I will be able to gaze out over the hill and see the house where it all began. The farm buildings are all gone, the animals are no more, the fields are barren\"¦I believe I shall be able to say, Well Done\".

The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, on Sunday, June 30, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm with the funeral service to be conducted in the Chapel at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. Glen Shelton officiating. A private interment will follow at Union Christian Church.
