Dr. Harvey M. Olin, Jr., 88, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, December 5, 2018. He was born on May 21, 1930 in Buffalo, NY to the late Harvey M. Olin Sr. and Evelyn Fakler Olin.
He started violin training at the age of 12; at 18 he attended Buffalo State University, Oberlin College and received a Bachelor of Music from Wheaton College, Wheaton Ill., also receiving a Masters degree in Music Literature from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY, and a Doctorate in Violin Performance from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, La.
He served in the U.S. Air force during the Korean War, and was stationed at Lackland and Wichita Falls Air Force Bases in Texas where he played in the Base orchestra and bands.
He played First Violin with the Indianapolis and New Orleans Symphonies, and taught at Central Michigan University, (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), Bethany College (Lindsborg, Kan.); Loyola University, (New Orleans, La.); and Liberty University, (Lynchburg, Va.); and presented numerous solo violin recitals in venues throughout the South, the East Coast and the Midwest. In his later years, he opened the Blue Ridge Piano and Rebuilding Service in Forest, Va., rebuilding and refinishing more the 25 Steinway grand pianos, and servicing Sweet Briar College, Randolph College and University of Lynchburg pianos.
Dr. Olin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dr. Esther Clark Olin, and two children, a daughter Tamara Olin Tinnin and her children, Wesley Tucker of Rolla, Mo., and Kristy Tucker Blackwell of Indianapolis, Ind.; and Mark Randall Olin and his children, Andrew Olin and Serona Olin, Indianapolis, Ind.; two great-grandchildren, Anderson and Benjamin Tucker of Rolla, Mo.
A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. His ashes will be interred in the Clark Family plot at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Iowa under direction of Garland, Van Arkel, Langkamp Funeral Chapel.
