Dr. Howard Riley Nay
April 13, 1930 — October 6, 2015
Howard Riley Nay, MD, known to his friends as “Skip,” passed away peacefully on October 6, 2015, in Lynchburg, Virginia after suffering an acute stroke. He was 85.
Born on April 13, 1930, in Wheeling, West Virginia, Dr. Nay was the son of Howard Erwin Nay and Agnes Gauld Nay, and the youngest of four children. Skip was known as a fine athlete and standout basketball player. He was team captain both at Triadelphia High School in Wheeling, and at VMI in Lexington, VA, where he graduated with a BA in 1952.
He received his MD from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City in 1956. After his internship at Bellevue Hospital, he completed his surgical residency at St. Luke’s Hospital, NYC. From 1959-1961 he served in the United States Air Force Medical Corps in Ankara, Turkey. Dr. Nay was Senior Attending Surgeon and Chief of the Surgery “A” Service at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York until his retirement in 2000. He was Instructor in Surgery and Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Columbia University, College of P&S, and had several articles published in medical publications throughout his career. A talented and innovative surgeon, Dr. Nay was known for his kind bedside manner. He had a private practice in Manhattan at 925 Park Avenue, and later worked at Isabella Nursing Home in New York until 2012.
He raised his family in Tenafly, New Jersey and moved to Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, Virginia in May of 2014, where he enjoyed spending time with his dear VMI “Brother Rats.”
Skip was an avid golfer, a lover of classic films, theater, big band jazz, and most of all, was a devoted father, Granddaddy, uncle and friend. He had a keen understanding of what was important in life, and had a way of touching those in his life deeply.
Dr. Nay was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Geraldine “Gerry” Tullock Nay; his parents, Howard E. Nay and Agnes G. Nay of Wheeling, WVA, his brother, Robert E. Nay of Springfield, VA, and his sister Barbara Nay Raine of Charleston, WVA. He is survived by his sister Janet Nay Carenbauer of Wheeling, WVA; his daughters Kathryn Nay Clay of Lynchburg, VA, Betsy Nay Schwengel of Bristol, RI, Jenny Nay Masters of Hastings on Hudson, NY; his grandchildren Luke, Dina, Riley and Teddy; his sons in law, Lucius D. Clay of Lynchburg, VA and Robert H. Schwengel of Bristol, RI; brother and sister in law, John and Kathy Godwin of Alpharetta, GA, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebratory service will be held on Friday, October 9, 2015, at 11:30 AM in the chapel at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, VA. A reception at the Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg will immediately follow. Internment of his remains and service in Onteora Cemetery, Tannersville, NY will take place in summer, 2016.
