View Tribute VideoDr. Jasper Theodore Cabell Jr., 86, of Lynchburg, VA, transitioned Sunday, March 13, 2016. He was the husband of Mary Carol Hutcherson Cabell for 46 years. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Cortney Heather-Annice Cabell of Clarksville, TN, his aunt Mrs. Dora H. Hubbard of Lynchburg, and a host of cousins and friends.
Dr. Cabell was born Tuesday, May 28, 1929 in Campbell County, VA, to the late Jasper T. Cabell, Sr. and the late Julia Hamler Cabell. Growing up in the Pleasant Valley community, he received his early education at Megginson School. Eventually, he entered Dunbar High School in Lynchburg. Upon graduating in 1947, Jasper began college at Bluefield State College. A year later, he transferred to West Virginia State College (now University) where he majored in biology. While at West Virginia State College, he was initiated into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Prior to graduating, his beloved mother passed away. Her sister Irma H. Ferguson and husband Mott, as well as the family offered continuous encouragement and support. The relationship between Jasper and his Aunt was more like mother and son until her demise. In 1951, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree. Jasper then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served through 1955. He was consistently recognized for distinguished accomplishments and service. After his discharge, he was employed at the Veteran’s Administration in New York City. In 1959, he entered dental school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. In 1963, he received his D.D.S. degree. He returned to New York City to receive his internship at Harlem Hospital. He re-enlisted in the United States Air Force as a captain in the Dental Service. He then attended the Dental Orientation course at Gunter Air Force Base, Alabama and was assigned to Selfridge Air Force Base, Michigan for two years as an oral surgeon. While in the United States Air Force, Dr. Cabell attended The School of Oral Pathology and Oral Surgery at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. Upon his discharge in January 1967, he returned to Lynchburg to begin his practice. He became reacquainted with Mary Carol Hutcherson and on December 21, 1969, they married. To this union, their daughter Cortney was born and was their pride and joy.
His faith was an integral part of his life and remained steadfast until his demise. He grew up in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and was on the Board of Trustees. Throughout his life, he and his uncles Henry and Jack Hamler had an appreciation for the outdoors. Hunting and fishing became passions. Being an avid fisherman, he would depart in the wee hours to meet his buddies to head for the coast and would return with cooler-filled catch. For quite some time, he was on a bowling league. He had a passion for sports.
Dr. Cabell’s adages in life were always “play to win” and “work hard, play harder.” His spirit was caring, loving, and supportive of others in all walks of life. He was a proud man who embraced his family and friends dearly. Respect for others was paramount to his existence and he treated others in a manner in which he desired in return.
Family reunions were important to him. He loved seeing the older family members and seeing the new additions to the family. He maintained friends from high school and when it was time for the All Dunbar Reunion, he could be found in the lobby welcoming all. This was general for the National Dental Association (NDA) conventions as well. He had a special love for his alma maters. Annually, Jasper returned for Homecoming to visit the school and to tailgate with friends, many of whom were fraternity brothers. Meharry occupied a significant place in his heart. It was there that he learned the skills to sustain his livelihood. He maintained lifelong friends and a special fondness for many of his instructors. Not only was he an “Omega Man,” but a member and participant of numerous organizations namely The Revelers, Ltd., Step with Links Board of Directors, NDA, American Dental Association (ADA), Lynchburg Dental Society, Lynchburg Voters League, and the NAACP. Many of which he held life memberships.
Shortly after over 40 years of practice, “Doc,” as he was popularly addressed, he retired in 2005 when his health declined. The light was slowly dimming. He went to the Summit for special care. The active, charismatic, mellow kind of guy’s life had run full course, and the time had come when all had been said and done. He rested finding victory in the end on Sunday, March 13 at 5:50am.
The family will receive friends from 11am to noon on March 17, 2016 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church followed by the Omega Psi Phi Memorial Service. A celebration of Jasper’s life will commence with Reverend Dr. Carlton Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in the Megginson Family Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 16.
