John David George, Jr., faithful and caring husband, father, grandfather, friend professor and mentor, formally of Forest, is now finally Home with his Lord – after eight moves as an Army “brat,” and twenty five as an Army Officer/professor.
John was born in Salem, Ore, April 10, 1936 to John David and Lillian Dahl George, and died August 21, 2018.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy; their son, Jeff George (Rhonda) and his children, Levi, Micah & Noa George, their daughter, Jennifer George Whitt (David) and their children, Kaitlin Whitt Nygren (Erik, and John and Judy’s great grandson, Anders), Gabrielle and Jonathan Whitt; one sister, Sharon Diebel, a sister-in-law, Ames Curtis, and numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
John graduated from the United States Military Academy, Class of 1958, then served twenty two years as an Infantry officer including two tours in Vietnam. In succeeding years he received his MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Alabama before being assigned to teach in the Department of Leadership at the Academy, interspersed by numerous other assignments. Upon retirement in 1979 John received the Army’s third highest award for service, the Legion of Merit. Following his military career he and Judy returned to his beloved West Point to organize and direct a ministry to cadets & faculty as the first staff member for the Officers’ Christian Fellowship (OCF) at West Point, a privileged position he held for eleven years. His third career of twenty six years was spent teaching and mentoring students in the School of Business at Liberty University, retiring with the title of Professor Emeritus.
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church where John served as a Sunday School teacher and Elder, Saturday, September 8 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Brett Eubank officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
The family is so grateful for all the expressed love and kindnesses shown by so many friends; and for all who have so faithfully and lovingly cared for John these past months.
