Dr. John F. Laneve, Sr., 77, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on September 18, 2012. John was an outgoing, friendly person with a wonderful sense of humor who knew no strangers and touched the lives of many.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joby; five children and six grandchildren; son, James (Leigh Ann) and their children: Ashley, Samuel, and Jacob of Lynchburg, VA; daughters, Michele Laneve and Natalie Laneve of Virginia Beach, VA and Mary (Tom) Doyle of Richmond, VA and their children: Kellie, Casey, and Tommy; and son, John Jr. of Lynchburg VA. He is also survived by his brother, Samuel Laneve, and sisters, Marilyn Kautz, Linda Wickstrom, and Donna Cercone.
He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mildred Laneve, and sisters, Gloria and Mildred.
John was born in Newell, WV, just west of Pittsburgh, PA, on March 13, 1935. He graduated from Wells High School where he was an integral member of the 1952 West Virginia State Championship Basketball Team.
He attended the University of Pittsburgh where he was a member of both the basketball and baseball teams. Following his graduation from the Southern College of Optometry in 1962, Doc started practicing optometry in Lynchburg, and soon after, began coaching basketball at Holy Cross High School. He was very fond of both of his extended families.
Doc was an avid sports fan with his greatest loyalties given to the Pirates and Steelers, and the Fighting Irish on Saturdays.

In lieu of flowers, Coach & Mrs. Laneve have requested that memorial gifts be sent to Holy Cross Regional School, 2125 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg Virginia 24501.
Visitation will be from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., today, Friday, September 21, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg.
A celebration Mass of Resurrection will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church by the Rev. James Gallagher. Burial will be private.
