Dr. John Millard Gilkey

Dr. John Millard Gilkey died peacefully on, Monday, April 9, 2018 at home surrounded by his Family.
Born on March 17, 1946, in Asheville, N.C., he was the son of the late John Millard Gilkey, Sr., and Margueritte Bodie Gilkey. He grew up in Marion, N.C. He then attended the University of NC at Chapel Hill for both undergraduate and medical school on Morehead Scholarships receiving degrees in 1968 and 1972 respectively. Following his internship at Duke in obstetrics and gynecology, he moved to Lynchburg, Va., in 1976 where he enjoyed private practice for 35 years.
Equal to his devotion to medicine was his love of home and family. John married Sara Louise McPeake (Sally) of Loudon, Tenn. in 1968. After several moves they settled permanently on their beloved 50 acres on Trents Ferry Road. John mowed, tilled, mended, and nurtured their personal paradise for 39 years. He was most pleased with securing the property with a conservation easement for future generations.
Above all else, John was a loving husband to Sally for 49 years and a devoted father to his two daughters, both of whom survive him. Melissa Blair Gilkey of Chapel Hill, N.C., is married to Martin Johnson and they have two wonderful children, Soren and Laurel. Anna Gilkey Roscoe of Winston-Salem, N.C., is married to Michael Roscoe and they also are blessed with two wonderful children, Evelyn and John. In addition he is survived by his sister, Margueritte Gilkey McDonald and her husband Thad McDonald of Raleigh, N.C.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at the home he loved on, Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 10:00 am.
