Dr. John Douglas Morrison

July 22, 1951 — May 23, 2025

Dr. John D. Morrison, 73, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on May 23rd, 2025. He was the son of the late John Andrew Morrison and Maxine Swan Morrison.

John was born on July 22nd, 1951, in Billings, Montana. He attended the University of Montana for his undergraduate studies, obtained two Master’s degrees from Western Baptist Theological Seminary, and obtained an MA and PhD from the University of Virginia. He accomplished much in his lengthy career, including the publication of scholarly articles and books, as well as a fulfilling career as a professor at Liberty University where he retired after 36 years of teaching. Prior to his career in academia, he taught English,coached track, football, and basketball at Sweet Grass County High School in Big Timber, Montana. He served as an associate pastor, with fellow seminarians at Bethel Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon from 1977 to 1983.

John was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, and then Hyland Heights Baptist Church. He enjoyed buying books, reading books, teaching books, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed his yearly trips to Montana to visit family and friends. He attended the annual national Evangelical Theological Society conference with his Liberty University colleagues. He enjoyed visiting his precious children and grandchildren. In his later years, he greatly looked forward to eating out with his friends.

John is survived by his wife, Ellen Teichrow Morrison; children, Heather Scott (Philip) and Shawn Morrison (Meghan) ; grandchildren, Charity, Calvin, Charlotte, Emilia, Gabrielle,, Benjamin, Chesterton, Nathan, John, and Susannah; and siblings, Debbie Rabideau and Scott Morrison (Nancy) ; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, in Lynchburg, Virginia. The family requests that all attending wear bright colors which John enjoyed.
