Dr. John Robert Wenger, Jr., 85, of Bedford, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 at Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Linville, VA on March 1, 1931, he was a son of the late John Robert Wenger, Sr. and Dorothy Mellinger Wenger. He is also preceded in death by a sister; Emily Peachey.
Dr. Wenger graduated from the Medical College of Virginia and practiced medicine in Bedford from 1964-2001, when he retired. He was a great fan of any UVA sports.
Dr. Wenger is survived by his children: Kristin Wenger of Charlottesville, John “Josh” Robert Wenger III., of Richmond, Thomas Scott Wenger, of Tampa, FL, Sarah Kathryn Wenger, of Woodbridge; sisters; Evelyn Basinger of Linville; Joanna Lehman and husband, John of Hesston, KS, Margaret Gale and husband, David of Tiskilwa, IL; brother: David Wenger and wife, Barbara of East Lansing, MI; grandsons: Holden Wenger, Justin Snyder; former wife, friend and mother of his children: Susan Heslep Wenger, of Nags Head, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends here at Tharp Funeral Home, in Bedford, Friday, November 18, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. The family will have a private burial in the spring.
In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions in Dr. Wenger’s name to the Bedford County Rescue Squad, 311 Bedford Ave. Bedford, VA 24523.
