Dr. Joseph Kemp Houck, 81, died Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at Lewis Gale Hospital in Roanoke after a short illness.
Kemp was educated in Lynchburg at Virginia Episcopal School (VES). He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served as an acolyte and a junior choir member. He received a bachelor degree and master degree in English from the University of Virginia and a doctorate in English from the University of North Carolina.
Kemp was a gifted scholar of English Literature and a well-regarded educator. At VES, he taught English and Chemistry. For more than two decades he taught a wide range of English courses at the University of Kansas.
He was the first born son of the late Dr. Joseph William Houck and the late Katherine Kemp Houck. He is survived by his daughter, Frances Langhorne Houck of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; granddaughters, Margaret Marshall Fairey and Annie George Fairey; two brothers, Thomas Langhorne Houck and wife, Joyce and Leighton Summerson Houck and wife, Pinky; and a sister-in-law, Betsy Houck, all of Lynchburg. A brother, Dr. Peter William Houck, preceded Kemp in death.
A family service will be held at a later date.
