Marvin Loran Gold, 72, died Monday, January 23, 2012 at Westminster-Cantebury. He was the husband of Susannah Campbell Gold to whom he had been married for 50 years.
Born on June 9, 1939,in Stuart, Florida, he was the son of the late L.T. and Grace Sorrels Gold.
He was ordained as a minister in 1960. He graduated from Mars Hill College, Wake Forest University, did his Internship and Residency at the School or Pastoral Care at North Carolina Baptist Hospital and earned his doctorate from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. During his lifetime, he served over 26 churches in Virginia and North Carolina.
Marvin became Chaplain at Southeastern General Hospital; Lumberton, North Carolina in 1968 and in l974 became the Director of the Department of Pastoral Care at Virginia Baptist Hospital. While in Virginia, he served as Clinical Director to the Pastoral Counseling Center of Central Virginia. He was a member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church, a Diplomate in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, and adjunct field faculty for doctoral students at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Southern Seminary and Drew Theological Seminary.
In retirement Marvin was Assistant Minister at Brunswick Islands Baptist Church and a member of the General Board of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention.
Marvin lived through dementia in his later years as he lived his life…with grace and good humor.
His wish was to be remembered as a good man who loved his family, his friends, his work, laughter and sailing!
He believed in a loving, encouraging and forgiving God and tried to live his life reflecting this. His family and friends feel he more than succeeded.
In addition to his wife Sue, Marvin is survived by his two sons, Dr. Andrew Gold of Boise, Idaho: Paul Gold and his sons Alexander, Benjamin and Christopher, Paul's wife Anne and her son Benjamin all of Lynchburg; one daughter, Courtney Gold of Roanoke, Virginia; a step-mother Nora Gold, a brother, Robert Gold, a sister, Marian Tyre(Dean);and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Memory Support Unit and the staff of 5th Drinkard at Westminster-Cantebury and the team from Gentle Shepherd Hospice for the excellent and loving care given to Marvin.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, February 3, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Dr., Lynchburg, Virginia with Reverend Catharine Montgomery officiating: reception following. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service,
