On Monday, September 28, 2015, Dr. Ruble, husband of Pamela Jones Ruble, entered through God’s Eternal Gates leaving his earthly home. He was the son of the late W. Earl and Juanita W. Ruble, and was born in Roanoke, Va. on January 15, 1942.
Dr. Ruble graduated from Jefferson High School in Roanoke, Va., from Hampden-Sydney College and from The Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. After dental school, he and his wife, Pam, moved to Virginia Beach, Va., where he set up his first dental practice, worked part time in the Health Department Dental Clinic and in another private dental practice. During his adult years in Virginia Beach and then in Lynchburg he was active in the Lions Club and the Exchange Club.
In 1971 Dr. Ruble and his family moved to Lynchburg, Va., and he set up his private dental practice. He was fond of his staff and appreciated their faithful service. His patients truly became his friends; he enjoyed being with them and taking care of their dental needs. He was a kind and caring man of honor, full of integrity and great moral values. At the end of 2002 he retired from dentistry.
Dr. Ruble was an avid outdoorsman. In his earlier years he was active in the Boy Scouts and attained the highest level as Eagle Scout. From his youth through adulthood he enjoyed playing tennis, racket ball, hand ball and golf. He spent many hours hunting, fishing, hiking and camping, not to mention riding his dirt bike and racing enduros. Also evident was his great love for the dogs he had as pets; they loved him as much as he loved them.
Dr. Ruble was a life long member of the Presbyterian Church, first of the PCUSA and later of the EPC. He remained faithful to his Lord throughout his life. He was active in church choirs for many years and served as a treasurer, Deacon and Elder since his early adult years. Dr. Ruble was a Sunday school teacher, chairman of several church committees and served on many others.
Later in life, after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, he was blessed with several companions who would go on many outings with him, such as hiking, fishing, and playing golf. These young men brought a quality to Dr. Ruble’s life that enabled him to enjoy God’s beautiful creation; he cherished those very special relationships that were formed. Throughout this period of time Dr. Ruble felt God’s love and grace in his life and was very grateful. The family praises the Lord for each of them.
This became Dr. Ruble’s statement of faith after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease: “I believe that the Lord is Sovereign, and in His Sovereignty He could heal me. But, as of now, in His Sovereignty He has chosen not to heal me. Therefore, we are to praise His name and glorify Him in the midst of it.” This is how he lived out the remainder of his life.
Dr. Ruble’s loving memory will be cherished by his devoted wife of forty nine and a half years, Pamela Jones Ruble; his daughters, Amy R. (David) Sanderlin of Richmond, and Gwen R. (Shelton) King of Powhatan; and his son, Richard E. Ruble, Jr. (Hannah) of Roanoke. He had eight wonderful grandchildren, Eric and Corrine Sanderlin, Jessica, Ryan and Brandon King, and Trevor, Reid and Elliana Ruble. Also surviving Dr. Ruble are his sister, Nancy R. (Jack) Perry of Lynchburg; his two nieces, Cindy (Charles) Fisher, and Caroline (Skip Hudson) Perry; and his nephew, John (Dawn) Perry.
The family would like to thank his many companions/caregivers, the staff at Runk & Pratt Memory Care Facility and the staff at Seven Hills Hospice who cared for Dr. Ruble. His life was enriched by each of you and the family praises the Lord for you. Kyle Dow, Ken Patterson, Drew Saunders, Clara Jones, Angie Rose, Beatrice Patrick, Linda Frempong and DeShana Witcher were faithful and caring personal companions.
