Dr. Thomas Howard Albertson, 83, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2018 in his residence at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, Va. He was the loving husband of Frances Brawley Albertson for 60 years.
Born on February 14, 1934 in High Point, N.C., Tom was the son of the late Clarence Jacob Albertson and Millie Hill Albertson, and brother of the late Ronald Clarence Albertson. Tom graduated from Duke University. Immediately thereafter, he attended the Duke University School of Medicine, graduating in 1959. It was during those years at Duke University that he met his wife-to-be, Frances. They got married in 1957, she attended Duke’s nursing school while Tom studied medicine. After receiving his medical degree, Tom continued his education at Duke through his internship, two residency programs (Pediatrics and Pediatric Immunology), and a fellowship.
In 1965, Tom accepted the invitation to join F. Read Hopkins Pediatrics Associates, bringing Fran and Tom to Lynchburg, where he passionately practiced medicine for 35 years and demonstrated his love for pediatrics. Tom was also heavily involved in the medical network as well as the local community. He was president of the local Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a member of the VASP board for 30 years, a member of the New Vista and Mental Health board, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Allergy & Asthma and a St. John’s Church Guardian Angel Co-chairman.
Tom was an avid member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry. He was an Iron Duke Basketball enthusiast. He enjoyed gardening and was especially interested in wildflowers & roses. His love of photography during his world travels with Fran and his time with Grandchildren produced many stunning photographs loved by many.
In addition to his wife, Fran, he is survived by Thomas Howard Albertson, Jr. and his wife, Bernadette; Jill Beck and her husband, Richard; Sheryl Wardman and her husband, Richard; and Millie Sue Kelleher and her husband, Robert; and their 11 grandchildren, Kelsey, Laurel, and Garrett Albertson; Richard, Bradley, and Scott Clough; Stephanie and Kelly Wardman; Maggie, Joey, and Michael Kelleher.
The family will receive friends at Westminster Canterbury Commons Sunday, February 4, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 pm.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Monday, February 5, 2018, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg with the Rev. William J. Watson, III officiating. The family will receive friends at Magill Hall at St. John’s following the service.
