Duane Ivan McCoy, 81, of Forest passed away at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the loving husband of Wilma Minnix McCoy for 60 years.
Duane was born September 9, 1928 in Huntington, WV. He was the son of the late Orville Randall McCoy and Marguerite Auvil McCoy. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and was truly devoted to Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, where he served as an ordained deacon, Sunday school teacher, and youth leader.
He started his career as a Cavalier handing out Cavalier Cigarettes. He was part of the floral industry for over 40 years and a partner in Lynchburg Wholesale Floral Corporation and was a past president of the Mid Atlantic Florist Association. Duane was a member of the Forest Lions Club and a 50 year member of the Forest Masonic Lodge. He loved his home, yard and his tractors.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his sons; David McCoy and wife, Wanda of Lynchburg and Timothy McCoy and wife Susan of Forest; his grandchildren, Erik McCoy and wife Michele of Summerduck, VA, Kelley Thacker and husband David of Forest, Brittany, Shannon and Ethan McCoy all of Forest, Sumer Hogan, Claire Vincent, and Montgomery Hogan all of Bedford; his great grandchildren, Whitney Vincent and Cole Thacker; his brother, Gene McCoy and wife Sally of Charlotte, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Martha Hogan, a granddaughter, Emily Hogan-Rupel, and a sister Edna Bowe.
The family will receive friends Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 5:00 to7:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 3, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Chestnut Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Bower officiating. Interment will follow in the Mausoleum at Virginia Memorial Park.
