Dwain Hunter Mason

Dwain Hunter Mason, 83, of Forest, Virginia, and former resident of Chesapeake, Virginia, died Friday, November 6, 2015, at Summit Health and Rehab in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Mr. Mason was born in Swan Quarter, North Carolina, the son of the late Nathaniel Staton and Elvine Mason. He married his loving wife, Sherma Mason, on April 17, 1954.

He was a member of Kempsville Christian Church where he served as Elder, Chairman of the Board, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and quartet member for 60 years.

He served as Treasurer for his son’s Cub Scout Pack 363 at Haygood Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

He served his country in the Navy during the Korean War. Later, he retired from Norfolk Police Department, where he served from 1954 to 1988. He was awarded in the 14th Annual Police Service Award by the International Association of Chiefs of Police for developing the Norfolk Police Department’s TRACER and fingerprint identification system. He later retired from Virginia State Police where he served as a Motorist Assistant.

He is survived by his wife, Sherma Mason; son, Dwain L. Mason and wife Pat; daughter, Lisa Mason Cox and husband, Joel; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, David Stanley Mason; and sister, Viola Evelyn Carawan.

Funeral services will be at Avalon Church of Christ, 844 Woodstock Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia conducted by Randy Childress.
