Earl Withers Thompson

Earl Withers Thompson, 70, of Lynchburg, known to everyone as “Squirrel”, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Earl was born in Lynchburg on March 19, 1944, the eldest of three sons to the late Withers Horsley Thompson and Viola Isabella Baugher.

In addition to his father, Earl was preceded in death by his partner in life, Judith Elaine Simpson, stepmother, Geraldine Thompson, stepfather, Alton Baugher, sister-in-law Dianne Thompson, and a step brother Clay White.

In addition to his mother, Earl is survived by his daughter, Andrea Lloyd and her husband, Jody of Pleasant View; four grandchildren: Elijah, Jacob, Maegan and Kayleigh; two brothers: Ralph Thompson, and Kenneth Thompson and his, wife Peggy; niece, Jody Odenbach and family; nephew, Jerry Wayne Thompson; step sister, Amy Howard and her husband, Jimmy; step-brothers: David White and his wife, Carrie, and Barry White and his wife, Susan; and many devoted friends.

Earl enjoyed cooking, old country music and bluegrass, dancing, camping, hunting and fishing as well as spending time with friends. A graduate of E.C. Glass High School, Earl proudly served our country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Stormes and USS Shenandoah during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Navy, Earl worked as a draftsman and spent the remainder of his employment years in different types of sales, mainly flooring. He was a respected member of the Moose Lodge 715 where he volunteered in various capacities.

A service honoring Earl’s life will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory in Lynchburg with the Rev. Dr. Tom Bryant officiating,  after which Earl’s family and friends can spend time remembering this gentle natured man.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1160 Pepsi Lane, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of Trinity Mission of Charlottesville, Runk & Pratt of Forest, Lynchburg General Hospital and Virginia Baptist Hospital for their compassion and loving care of Earl during his battles.
