Edith Williams Seibert, 95, of Bedford died Thursday, July 28, 2016. Edith was born in DeWitt, VA, May 29, 1921, number 6 in a family of 12 children on a tobacco farm. She graduated from Sunnyside McKenny High School in 1938 back when Virginia only had 11 grades. She worked at Tuckers Lunch Room where she flirted with the truckers for dime tips. She then went to work at the button factory where she made more money. She graduated from Petersburg Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. She spent part of her training in Philadelphia where she met William Seibert whom she married in January 1945 before he left for Italy at the end of WWII. She had three children: two boys, one girl. She worked at various hospitals in Virginia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia before retiring to Bedford in 1988.
She was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church, she volunteered for Bedford Christian Ministries, and Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was the Welcome Wagon Lady for a number of years after moving here and quickly made many friends. She was a member of AARP and Bellevue Seniors. She enjoyed life among good neighbors on Westview Ave and walked many miles among friends around the “loop”. She loved to travel and at one time enjoyed going to four different time share properties with her many friends. She loved to play ping-pong, various card games, and checkers and jack rocks.
Edith is survived by her sons, William Jr, and his wife, Kim, of Charles Town WV, Douglas, of Jarratt VA; daughter, Martha Johnson and her husband, Roger, of Bedford VA.; nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, sisters, Sarah Stigall, of Dewitt VA, Aileen Zahradka, of Petersburg VA, Ercelle Wallace, of McKenny VA, and Christine Halland, of Colorado Springs, CO. and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made in Edith’s honor to Bedford Centra Hospice 1621 Whitfield Dr. # C, Bedford, VA 24523.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Main Street United Methodist Church. Time to be determined.
