Edward Alan Baer

Edward Alan Baer lost his final battle on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, in the Critical Care Hospital of The Medical College of Virginia in Richmond….and oh how he did not like to lose any battle, especially a battle of wits.  He is survived by his loving wife and business sidekick of 38 years, Kathryn \"Kathy\" Riner Baer of Lynchburg,  the daughter and son-in-law he was so proud of, Michelle Baer Gray and Billy Gray, and his shining stars, his two grandsons, Jordan Michael Gray and Dylan Edward Gray all of Pinehurst,  NC.

Ed was born to the late Erwin Peter Baer and Nell Everette Baer on October 30, 1951.  He is also survived by 2 brothers and their families, Charlie and his wife Sara Baer and their daughter, Meredith Baer; and Mike and his wife Donna Baer, all of Lynchburg, and their children, Ashley Baer Ferguson and her husband Waverly Ferguson of Williamsburg, Abbey Baer of Richmond and Andrew Baer of Lynchburg.  He was predeceased by his older sister, Cecilia Baer.   Ed\"™s Grandparents were the late Peter and Katharina Baer, both born in Germany and who migrated to Lynchburg to give a better life to their family and the late James and Vera Everette of Lynchburg.  He was the son-in-law of Dorothy Wood Riner and the late E. Curtis Riner, and brother-in-law to Roger C. Riner, all of Lynchburg.  His furry 4 legged \"babies,\" Cassie and Izzie, will miss their daily belly rubs.

Ed was a part of his family\"™s business that he truly loved, Baer & Sons Memorials, Inc., from the time he was old enough to trampass thru cemeteries helping his Father and Grandfather find the monument they were looking for.   Thru the years Ed has been active in Marshall Lodge #39, Lynchburg Chapter #54 Order of the Eastern Star, the Brookville-Timberlake Lions Club and the Lynchburg Host Lions Club.  Ed was never without a word of advice and along with that his opinion of every situation – which sometimes we did not listen to – but would find out down the road he was the one that was really right.  On the other hand, his heart and wallet were never closed to the needy whether it was with the Lions Club eye glasses program or for someone he had \"heard\" needed a helping hand.

Ed grew up in Lynchburg, was a member of the famous E. C. Glass Class of 1969; graduated from CVCC and attended Lynchburg College.  He was a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and attended Catholic school.  After his marriage to Kathy he joined her as a part of West Lynchburg Baptist Church.  Ed & Kathy enjoyed their many camping trips and the many friends made as they traveled.  Myrtle Beach rarely missed their annual visits.  In the last few years Ed and Kathy were very fortunate to be able to make 2 road trips to see America – something Ed would certainly tell you to take time in your lifetime to do.

As Ed requested, his remains will be cremated and interred at Spring Hill Cemetery.  His family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home at 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday, December 19, 2010.

In lieu of flowers, Ed requested memorial donations be made to The Ed Baer Memorial Eyeglass Fund c/o Brookville-Timberlake Lions Club, P O Box 4051, Lynchburg VA 24502.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family, 434-237-9424.
