Edward Everett Chipman

d. June 28, 2016

Edward Everett Chipman, 74, died Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Lynchburg General Hospital.   He was the husband of Sue Anne Chipman.  The couple had been married for 50 years.

Ed was born March 25, 1942 in Kankakee, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1965.  He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and served his country for 6 years as a Marine aviator.  Ed piloted the A-6 Intruder and was attached to VMA-225.  The “Vikings” were, and still are, a very close knit group of Marines who flew the original transpac of the squadron planes 11,200 miles from Cherry Point, NC to Danang, Vietnam.  They refueled their aircraft in mid-air over the Pacific on this lengthy journey.  This squadron flew day and night missions over Vietnam for 13 months and, as they were returned individually to the states, they were replaced with fresh A-6 pilots and navigators – but the planes remained in-country.

After Ed returned to civilian life, he moved his family to Lynchburg, VA where he worked in various engineering and management positions with Babcock and Wilcox for 35 years.  He was a long time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where he served in many capacities from youth Sunday school teacher to woodworker and gardener.  Recently he was enjoying working with the ramp building crew of Interfaith Outreach Association.  Ed was an avid outdoorsman who loved hiking, fishing, boating, and camping with his family and friends.

Ed is survived by his wife, Sue, and their sons and spouses, Dan (Julie) and Don (Elise).  The sparks of his later life were his grandchildren:  Hunter, Tyler, Ashley, and Alexa Chipman.  He will be missed by his sister, Jeannine (Roger) Rainbolt, and by his brother-in-law, Chuck (Kris) Yettke and their families.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at St. John’s Episcopal Church.  The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 200 Boston Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24503, or to the Lynchburg Life Saving and Rescue Squad, 2007 Memorial Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501, or to the charity of your choice.
