Edward Lewis Mayhew, Jr.

Edward Lewis Mayhew, Jr., 84, of Amherst, VA, passed away on March 13, 2024. Edward was born in Lynchburg, VA, on August 3, 1939, to Edward Mayhew and Nell (Treadway) Mayhew. He was raised in Gretna, VA, and is survived by his sister, Ruth Hedrick (Robert) and brother, Mike Mayhew (Jeanie). Following high school, he received a Bachelor’s Degree from Lynchburg College and a Master’s Degree from the University of VA. During his college years, he served in the Army National Guard. After graduating from college, he began his teaching career, which spanned four decades, beginning in Campbell County Schools for the first few years and in Lynchburg City Schools for the remaining years.

Edward married his wife, Mary Ann, in 1980. They share five children: Edward Lewis Mayhew III (Toccoa), Kelley Elizabeth Bauman, Elizabeth Anne Brown (Jay), William Roger Sutherland (Lisa), and Dewey Christopher Mayhew (Angela). In addition, their family is blessed with eleven grandchildren as follows: Christen McKenzie Windham (Jason), Andrew Boone Bauman, Robert Warren Bauman, Toccoa Caine Archer (Ned), Elizabeth McKenzie Mayhew, Jack Miller Brown, Mary Addison Brown, William Roger Sutherland III, Bryce Barrett Sutherland, Edward Lewis Mayhew IV, Elizabeth Lucille Mayhew, and two great grandchildren: Scott Madison Windham and Forrest Blake Windham. Edward deeply loved his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home in Madison Heights, VA. A Mass of Resurrection service will be held Saturday, March 23, 2024, 1:00 pm at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Lynchburg, VA.
