Edward Sven (Ted) Benson died Friday, November 23, 2018 at Westminster-Canterbury, Lynchburg, Va. He was born December 6, 1931 to Arthur Ragnar and Doris Honiss Benson of Berlin, Conn. As a child, he fostered a keen interest and awareness of the natural world. With the help of his extended family, he developed a self-deprecating sense of humor. The Gunnery School (Class of 1949) nurtured his spirit of philosophical inquiry. This inquisitive nature further served him at Yale University (Class of 1953) where he designed his own program of study in economics and conservation.
Ted was employed at the Mildrum Manufacturing Company, a maker of fishing rod components, where he served as President for most of his career. Ted served, in the 1980s, as Treasurer and later as President of the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association. Ted was an active volunteer; serving as a trustee to the Berlin Savings Bank, and many other civic activities until most recently serving on both the resident council and the finance committee at Westminster-Canterbury. Under Ted’s direction, Mildrum Manufacturing sponsored the Annual Local Golf Tournament by providing the “Should Have Gone Fishing” award.
His avocations were related to his vocation, he was an avid fisherman – to the extent that even his honeymoon was spent fishing in Northern Maine and New Brunswick, Canada. Ted could always relate not only the places he has fished; but also the tackle he used, and the specifics of his catch. His children continue to enjoy fishing and many other outdoor activities and studies from his example.
Ted was happily married to Faith Baldwin Benson from 1954 until her death in 2005. He is survived by his four children: Eric Benson of Chapel Hill, N.C., Martha Doria of Southington, Conn., Ann Fondersmith of Ijamsville, Md., and Kari Benson of Lynchburg, Va. Among the children, there are ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Westminster-Canterbury in Lynchburg, Va.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ted Benson’s memory to The Gunnery School, The American Heart Association, or the Nature Conservancy.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
