Edward Thomas Young

Ed "Whis" Young went home to be with the Lord on November 16, 2010.  Ed was born September 12, 1918 in Elon, Virginia, the son of the late Othar Lee and Rebecca Farris Young.

As a young adult, Ed served four years in the Air Force, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.  He served in World War II, provided Basic Training instruction across the United States, and spent two years stationed in Calcutta, India.  He spent his post-military life working at Mead Corporation.  He finally retired after 35 years of service.  Being a jack of all trades (mechanic, electrician, painter and builder) with a strong work ethic, he was never content to sit still.  During his retirement, he refinished and reupholstered furniture.

Ed also loved music.  He was a soloist for the Golden Merrymakers for many fun years.  He also sang at various events including funerals, birthdays, Christenings, weddings and church.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe. He served the Lord faithfully in many capacities including church bus driver, usher and deacon.

Ed leaves his wife of 65 years, Aileen Burford Young.  He is also survived by his three sons and their wives: Allen and Patricia Young of Madison Heights, John and Dianne Young of Elon, and Paul and Ginger Young of Goochland; his nine grandchildren, Allena Tarvin (Dave) of Virginia Beach, Krista Moore (Brad) of Big Island, Spencer Young of Lynchburg, Lauren and Craig Young, both of Elon; and Harry, Thomas, Richard and Virginia Young, all of Goochland; and his three great-grandchildren, Dillon and Delanie Tarvin, and Maggie Moore.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Monroe with Pastor Glynn Coleman officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church and all other times at his residence. A private interment will take place in Centenary Cemetery, Naola.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Monroe, 139 Francis Avenue, Monroe, VA, 24574.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family, 434-237-9424.
