Edward W. “Ed” Smith, 70, of Forest, passed away Thursday, August 4th, 2016, after battling cancer for over a year. On March 1st of this year, he and his wife Peggy, celebrated 50 years of marriage.
Ed was born in Greenville, SC to the late Hoyt Thomas Smith and the late Corrie Bell Hollingsworth Smith.
He was a Vietnam Veteran proudly serving his country for five years in the Army. Following his service, he began a successful career in broadcasting working for Ted Turner. He went on to become General Manager of WTVR Radio Station in Richmond and then continued his career in Lynchburg at WJJS and WLGM. Upon leaving the broadcasting world, he started his own web-based sales company.
His true passion in life was bass fishing! This love took him to every lake east of the Mississippi and from Maine to Florida. He was a two-time winner of the Virginia State Bass Fishing Championship and was affectionately called “pro” by his fellow fisherman.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Sterling Smith of Palm Bay, Florida; his sisters, Donna Doss (David) of Atlanta, Ga., and Cherie Higgins (George) of Charlotte, N.C. He has three nieces, Aundrea Landwehr, Michelle Peele, and Smith Higgins; two nephews, Robert Higgins and Jami Corbin; and his sister-in-law, Brenda Corbin (Tom) of Washington, D.C.
The service to celebrate Ed’s life will be held on Friday, August 12, 2016, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg Chapel at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
Memorials made be made to Centra Hospice at 3300 Rivermont Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24503, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
