Eileen Hofmann Hawkins

Eileen Hofmann Hawkins died peacefully in the presence of family and friends on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the Runk and Pratt Forest Community where she received compassionate and dignified care.

Eileen was born July 2, 1924 in Syracuse, New York the eldest daughter of the late Leroy M. Schneider and Gertrude Nicholson Schneider. Eileen was twice widowed: her first marriage to John Robert (Bob) Hofmann (1947 to 1976) and her second marriage to Harold H. Hawkins (1983 – 2010). She was also preceded in death by her son Jack Hofmann and her grandson Robert (Bob) Frederick Billups.

Eileen is survived by her son David J. Hofmann and his wife Jackie of Lynchburg, daughter Katherine A. Billups and her husband John of Richmond, her sister Dolores S. Abt of Syracuse, NY, daughter-in-law Edna Hofmann of Forest, step-daughter Melinda Hawkins of Raleigh, NC, and step-son Chip Hawkins of Trappe, MD and several nieces and nephews. She was affectionately known as “Gigi” to nine grandchildren (John, Jennifer, Jeff, Greg, Brian, Bob, Peter, David and Michael) and four great-grandchildren (Caden, Cami, Luke and Brandon).

Eileen was a very kind and caring woman who was totally devoted to her family and many friends. When encountered with many of life’s challenges, she met them with her strong faith, strong will and an abundance of grace. Eileen’s easy smile and friendly demeanor were a welcoming greeting to all!

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2017 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church where Eileen was an active parishioner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Msgr. Michael D. McCarron officiating. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church (Social Outreach Ministry), the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
