Eleanor Gray Dennis was called to heaven on March 13, 2024.
Eleanor was born March 21, 1927 and was the daughter of Julius and Eleanor Farmer of Winston Salem, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Mary Ethel Gray and husbands, David Ralph Gray and Henry Harvey Dennis.
Eleanor attended Jefferson High School, Longwood University and Roanoke College and was an Elementary School Teacher in Roanoke and Lynchburg. She was also a Substitute Teacher for 5 years to Home Bound Students in the Lynchburg Area. She also found her calling when she was hired to be the Director of The Lynchburg Daily Bread. For 12 years Eleanor directed and coordinated volunteers from the greater Lynchburg area to prepare, cook and serve meals to the homeless and hungry. She also coordinated the local donations, devotions, and the daily programs. She felt it was a great honor to serve the community and today, Lynchburg Daily Bread’s website boasts they serve 78,689+ meals to the homeless and hungry of the community.
She was a member of Oakwood Garden Club, serving as President and Vice-President. She was a long- time member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a circle member, Sunday School substitute teacher, played the piano for the Men’s Bible Class, and served on other church committees. She raised 4 children and enjoyed tennis and bridge.
Eleanor is survived by her daughters Kathryn Eleanor Greenlaw and her husband, Hunter R. Greenlaw, Jr. of Fredericksburg, Va. and Susan Audrey Gray of Boynton Beach, Florida and her fiancé, Stephen D. Halliday of Boynton Beach, Florida, and son, David Ralph Gray, Jr. and his fiancé, Amanda Brewster of Smith Mountain Lake.
Grandchildren: Kathryn Ashley O’Brian of Delray Beach, Florida, and Eleanor Gray Rubinchak of Fredericksburg, Va., Abby Rose Reynolds of Boynton Beach, Florida, and Forrest Holt Gray and his wife, Jamie Allison Gray of Smith Mountain Lake, Va. Great Grandchildren: Emerson Gray Rubinchak, Harper Gray Rubinchak and Xander Apollo Gray.
