Eleanor Whitehurst Ragan

Eleanor Whitehurst Ragan, 89, died on September 16, 2012 at Westminster Canterbury. She was born in Martin County, North Carolina on February 2, 1923. She was the wife of the late Floyd Earl Ragan and the daughter of the late Reuben J. Whitehurst and Clemmie Whitman Whitehurst of Pitt County, North Carolina.

Shortly after graduating from secretarial school she and her family moved to Norfolk, Virginia. While a young mother and homemaker she was invited to join a committee from the Naval Hospital to establish the first clinic for treatment of Muscular Dystrophy in this country. From this rewarding experience she was able to establish a program, sponsored and recognized nationally, by Norfolk City Recreation Bureau to take recreation to home bound disabled persons.

In 1957 she and her family were one of the first GE families to move to Lynchburg. Eleanor volunteered at the Old Lynchburg Training School and Hospital (known as Central Virginia Training Center). In the early 1970\"™s under the supervision of Dr. Bob Gardner and Dr. Ben Nagler, she began Hudson House, a Chapter 10 program designed to enable persons with mental difficulties to resume a normal life style.

Eleanor was a committed and caring member of Peakland United Methodist Church for over 30 years. She loved books and with the aid of church members spent over 12 years organizing the church library. She with others established a book club over 12 years ago. She enjoyed working with the mission committee in relocating a family of 10 from Vietnam.

She is survived by two sons: James Whitman Ragan and his wife, Alice of Gastonia, N.C. and Jerry Neil Ragan and his wife, Daria of Belmont, N.C.; two grandchildren: Erica P. Ragan and Andrew W. Ragan; four step grandchildren: Anna Holloway, Jessica Mendez, Amanda Ray and Andrew Ray.

She was preceded in death by two brothers: Ivey J. Whitehurst and Raymond J. Whitehurst.

A memorial service will be held at the church at 1:00 pm on October 13, 2012 followed by the scattering of the ashes in the Scatter Gardens at the church. There will be visiting and refreshments in the Narthex.

In lieu of flowers, the family would request a donation of non-perishable food or a contribution to the Peakland United Methodist Church, 4434 Boonsboro Road, Lynchburg, VA 24503, for use in its missions programs.

Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Lynchburg (434-237-9424) is assisting the family.
