Elizabeth “Betty” Dabney Mccomb

d. October 25, 2016

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Dabney McComb, 93, a resident of Westminster/Canterbury in Lynchburg, went to be with her Savior on October 25, 2016. She was born April 24, 1923 in Hazard, Ky., the daughter of Oscar W. and Margaret Cline Dabney. She was predeceased by her husband, George H. McComb; her parents, her brother and sister-in-law, Oscar W. Dabney Jr. and Eleanor B. Dabney; and an infant brother, Adrian Eugene Dabney.

Betty graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, Va. at the age of 14, and attended Kanawha Jr. College and Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston) in Charleston W.Va., and later received her Master’s of Education from University of Virginia. She began her teaching career in Staunton, and followed her husband’s career moves to teach in Ellicott City, Md. and Lynchburg, Va. Hundreds of students at Paul Munro and Linkhorne Middle schools remember her as being an exciting and innovative teacher, though a strict disciplinarian.

Throughout her life, Betty was a talented crafter and took on each new project as a challenge until she had perfected it, from braided rugs to creating delicately quilled pictures. She lovingly created a large collection of beaded ornaments for the Chrismon tree at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She was also a long-time volunteer in the new-born nursery at Virginia Baptist Hospital and knit hundreds of baby caps for them.

Betty and George loved to travel and play golf, and found a way to combine the two. After retiring, they played golf in 49 states and 7 foreign countries. Betty also enjoyed playing Bridge and Canasta, visiting friends, and making personalized greeting cards on her computer.

Her faith and her church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, meant everything to her, and in her later years at Westminster Canterbury, she looked forward to the occasional times she was able to attend Sunday service, and enjoyed visits from parish members.

Survivors include daughters, Deborah Rolfe and husband Tom of Staunton, Brenda Beck of San Carlos Calif.; grandchildren, Andy Rolfe of Richmond Va., Kimberly Preston of Boulder Colo.; nephews, Buck Dabney (Diane), Jim Dabney (Beth), Glen Dabney (Karen); and stepson John McComb (Kathy).  We want to extend our sincerest thanks to the wonderful staff in Assisted Living and Memory Care of Westminster Canterbury for the constant and gentle care they provided her during the last years of her life.

The family will receive friends starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynchburg, with the funeral service following at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday in the Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Cemetery, Fishersville, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Holy Trinity Lutheran Endowment Fund, 1000 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, VA 24503, Westminster Canterbury Employee Gift Fund, 501 VES Road, Lynchburg VA 24503, or Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church, 30 Tinkling Springs Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939.
