Elizabeth Clark Roberts

February 8, 1926 — July 27, 2018

Elizabeth Clark Roberts (Betty) died peacefully at Westminster-Canterbury on Friday, July 27, 2018.  She was the wife of the late William Morsell Roberts, Jr.

Mrs. Roberts was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on February 8, 1926, the middle child of Alice Fleming Clark and Pendleton Scott Clark.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Alice Roberts Donaldson, her brother Pendleton Scott Clark, Jr. and her sister Katherine Clark Agnew Hare.

Mrs. Roberts was educated in the Lynchburg Public Schools and was graduated from St. Mary’s Junior College and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College.  She was an active and loyal member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she served in many capacities including Junior and Senior Wardens and Chair of the Altar Guild.  For many years, she graciously shared her talents as a gardener and flower arranger with the church she so loved.

A woman of wide-ranging talents and interests, she was a competitive and skillful tennis player, an avid bridge and mah-jongg player, and an adventuresome traveler.  Her gifts as a horticulturalist were evident in the charming garden she created and nurtured for more than 50 years at her Link Road home.  She was a member of the Junior League of Lynchburg, member and past president of the Hillside Garden Club, and served on numerous civic and charitable boards.  Her zest for life, sensible advice, keen sense of humor, and infectious laugh will be missed by her family and her many friends.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by her daughters Anne Roberts McKenna and her husband Wallace Glass McKenna, Jr. (Sandy) of Lynchburg, and Elizabeth Clark Roberts (Betsy) of Virginia Beach, VA, and her son-in-law, William Grady Donaldson, also of Lynchburg.  In addition, she is survived by three grandchildren, Kathryn Clark McKenna and her husband Michael Branch, William Henry Donaldson, and Alice Clark Donaldson; and two great-grandchildren Robert DeFillipis Branch and Elizabeth Beasley Branch; a devoted cousin, Alice Sheridan Appen; and nine nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own children.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 30, 2018 from 4 until 6:00 p.m. at the home of Anne and Sandy McKenna, 3320 Woodridge Place.

The funeral and inurnment service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 605 Clay Street, on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Catherine Montgomery and the Reverend William Bumgarner officiating.
