Elizabeth Gilliland Johnson passed away on September 29, 2024. She was born in Campbell County, VA, on September 22, 1931, a daughter of the late James Bates Gilliland and Annie Palmer Gilliland.
Elizabeth was educated in Aspen School. Upon graduation, she met and married Bernard Edwin Johnson, Jr. They married in June of 1951 and shared over five decades together until he passed in 2007. Elizabeth retired from General Electric after over 40 years of service. When she was not working, Elizabeth was a vital member of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, serving as a deaconess. She was an excellent cook, especially known for her biscuits. She loved gardening and especially seeing the product of her hard work being used in the homes of everybody that was lucky enough to get some of her canned goods. Elizabeth also loved trips to Myrtle Beach and camping.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, George Edwin Johnson; and eight siblings.
She is survived by her daughter, Ann Reynolds; one granddaughter, Jennifer Thomas (Scott); one great grandson, Lucian Kai Thomas; one step great grandson, Natas Sky Thomas; and many other family and friends.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, from 5 – 8 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
