Elizabeth Pierce Sanders, 91, died Saturday, January 12, 2013, in Lynchburg, VA.
A native of Winchester, VA, Betty was a daughter of the late Noble Childs Pierce, and the late Hennie Pirkey Pierce. A longtime resident of Portsmouth, Betty was a graduate of the Woman\"™s College of North Carolina (UNC Greensboro), and a retired Portsmouth elementary school teacher, a charter member of the Portsmouth YMCA aquatics program, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma National Honorary Society and a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Portsmouth.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth "Liza" C. Sanders and her husband, Terry Adams, of Lynchburg, VA, two grandchildren: John Adams and his wife, Cathy, of Bedford, VA, and Michelle Adams and her fiancé, Ben Bowman, of Washington, DC.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by two brothers: Frank and Noble Pierce; and her companion, Harry Tourtellott.
A celebration of Betty's life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 in the chapel at Trinity Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, with the Reverend Kathleen M. Bobbitt officiating.
