The following tribute was written by Elizabeth.
The irrepressible Elizabeth (aka Betsy, Betty, Beth, Liza, Liz, Sugar Girl and Love) departed this life and passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on October 20, 2021.
She was a life-long Presbyterian and member of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro, Virginia, waiting on Heaven’s shore for her soulmate and love of her life: Eddie Wayne Dooley of Tampa, Florida and Roanoke, Virginia. Ed passed away on May 11, 2011 with Elizabeth by his side. They met at League of Older Americans and were best friends and partners.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her loving parents Richard Lawrence B. Rouzie and Nannie B. Pattison Rouzie; a son, Jason Lewis Shirey; her biological parents Frank E. Draper and Hazel Lilly Draper; and several ex-husbands as well as best-friend-forever, Shirley Jean Tucker.
She is survived by her sister Anne L. Rouzie Carlson (Calvin) of Madison Heights; her beloved children Robyn Lynn Gray (Dean) of Roanoke, Eric Brian Royer of Waynesboro and Jared Lance Shirey of Roanoke; two grandchildren Neil Jordan (De’Ahzha) and Kerrigan Elizabeth Drewry; two great-grandchildren Camilla and Cara Drewry; and her numerous cousins.
All were precious to her, and she loved them dearly. She took pride in her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. To them she leaves this message: I Hope You Dance.
Elizabeth was born in Hampton, Virginia and raised in Waynesboro, Virginia. She graduated from Waynesboro High School and Waynesboro Community Hospital School of Practical Nursing before college in Richmond, Virginia.
She also attended Smithdeal-Massey Business College, R.P.I., Elizabeth Brant School of Business, Mary Baldwin College, Northern Virginia Community College, Cal Simmons Travel School, American University and The Institute for Legal Studies – earning two associate degrees and numerous accreditations.
Her employment allowed her to work in many challenging and interesting fields, to travel extensively and meet a variety of interesting and wonderful people.
In her younger days, she danced and appeared in productions and plays! She loved Broadway and acting, and was an avid movie buff. Artistic, she loved oil and watercolor painting, travel, the beach, shelling, the mountains, fluffy cats, blue birds, butterflies, and flower gardening (roses, orchids and gardenias were her favorites). She also loved rainbows, snow, clouds, sunsets, dancing, high heels and evening gowns.
She enjoyed classical music (Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copeland, Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber); old hymns (When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, The Old Rugged Cross); smooth jazz by Boney James; and country music in her later years, especially when Eddie sang to her.
Elizabeth enjoyed reading, writing, (keeping a daily journal and submitting articles to the Roanoke newspaper from time to time), collecting (beautiful seashells, dazzling Christmas ornaments, and hundreds of movies) and telling good stories. She laughed easily and often. A friend and supervisor said, “Elizabeth, you took lemons and made lemonade!” (Some sour, some sweet, but all good.)
Elizabeth wanted to conclude with these words: “My bucket list is complete. I am Home and all is well.”
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Life Church in Roanoke, 7422 Deer Branch Road, Roanoke, VA 24019. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the local ASPCA.
