Elmer E. Hatcher

July 26, 1938 — December 7, 2018

Elmer Elisha Hatcher, age 80 of Big Island, VA went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, December 7, 2018.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Jeanine Goff Hatcher; his son, Glenn Hatcher (Penny); daughter, Rhonda Hatcher and special friend (Calvin); grandson, Chris Hatcher (Maggie); great-grandson, Gabe Hatcher; brother, Wayne Hatcher (Orpha Lee) also numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Elmer was born the son of the late Harry Hatcher and Marion Watson Hatcher on July 26, 1938. He grew up in Wheats Valley area of Bedford county. In his early adult years, he served in the Army National Guard and drove a gas truck for Timlap. He soon started his logging business, Hatcher Logging Corp of Va. He became a well-respected timber harvester in Bedford county. That business is still in operation today. He also opened and operated a Union 76 station in Big Island for many years. Elmer was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for several years. He also served as a member of the Big Island Vol. Life Saving Crew alongside his wife Jeanine. As a young man Elmer enjoyed bear hunting and deer hunting with family and friends. Elmer also enjoyed his beloved farm where he tended cattle and harvested hay. In recent years he enjoyed the solitude of relaxing at his farm or taking rides with Jeanine to admire God’s beauty. Spending time with his family brought him tremendous joy. He was a devoted husband and loving father & grandfather to his children and grandchildren.

A funeral service and celebration of Elmer’s life will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Hunting Creek Baptist Church. With Rev. Philip Parker and Pastor Ken Bledsoe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A reception will follow the cemetery in the fellowship hall of Hunting Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford and all other times at the home.
