Elsie Floyd Jessee, 87, found eternal peace on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. Born September 26, 1933 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late William E. Floyd (Joe) and Eunice Jennings Floyd.
Ravaged by the cruel effects of Alzheimer’s disease, Elsie was cared for in her last years by the special staff at The Summit Health and Rehab, where she was fondly referred to as “feisty” and where she was known for singing the old gospel hymns and Christmas holiday songs with the voice of an angel.
Elsie is survived by her two daughters, Vickie McAlister (Mick) and Lori Wright; her three granddaughters, Loriann Grindal (Baard), Kariann Miller (Matt), and Alyson Wright; and four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Greyson, Caroline, and Maeve. She is also survived by her sister, Madeline Mawyer, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; siblings, Cecil Floyd, James Floyd, Shirley Gowen, and Leroy Floyd; son-in-law Kenneth Wright; and her father and mother-in-law, Bascom and Joyce Jessee.
Elsie had a special love for her church, her family, tending to her yard and flower gardens, and the ocean. She was a skilled seamstress and a wonderful baker. A family gathering did not begin until she arrived with a pie or cake from her oven. Elsie retired from Centra Health after serving 20 years as a Ward Secretary in the Cardiac Treatment and Skilled Care Units at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Fort Hill Memorial Park with her niece, Kay Higgins officiating. A reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall at First Presbyterian Church following the service.
For those who wish to make memorial contributions, the family would like for you to consider the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) in lieu of flowers.
