Emily Virginia Austin Turner peacefully departed this life on May 13, 2018 at her home in Evington, Va. She was born on September 4, 1931 as one of thirteen children born to the late Thomas R. Austin and Nannie Burrell Austin. She attended Bedford County Schools and was a staple in her community.
Emily spent much of her time being a homemaker and taking care of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with family, and being a faithful Christian at Mount Plain Baptist Church in Evington, Va. Emily served as the Church Clerk, member of Senior Choir, Usher Board and Hospitality Committee for many years. Emily was one of the Mothers of the Church. Many who remember her will note her wonderful cooking, infectious laugh, and radiant smile.
Emily was the wife of the late Edward M. Turner. She leaves to cherish her memories; children: Dennis Turner (Gloria) Evington, Va., Barbara Turner-Wade (Darnell) Lanham, MD, Thelma D. Turner (Carlton) Evington, Va., Joseph Turner (Leslie) Indianapolis, IN, John Barmore (Roya), Huddleston, Va.; grandchildren: Courtney Turner (Juet), Clinton, MD, Chadwick Turner, Lynchburg, Va., Lillian Langhorne, Lynchburg, Va., Donnell Wade, Washington, DC, Hailey Turner, King George, Va., Lanea Szymzcak, Indianapolis, IN, Ashtyn E. Brown, Evington, Va., Gabriella Turner, Indianapolis, IN; great-grandchildren: JJ Langhorne (deceased) Serenity Langhorne and Demitri Langhorne. Sisters Mary Rhodes (Evington, Va.), Marion Sneed, Louise Barmore, and Carol Austin (all of Washington, DC). Her siblings, Berta McCoy, Hattie Berry, Thomas Austin, Prince Albert Austin, Hickson Austin, Daniel Calloway, James Austin and Samuel Austin preceded her death. Emily also leaves behind a devoted niece and caretaker, Shirley Davis, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Mount Plain Baptist Church, Evington, Va. at 12:00 noon. Mrs. Turner will lie in repose one hour prior to the service.
