Ephraim Henry "Bud" Phillippe, Iii

Ephraim Henry “Bud” Phillippe, III, 88, of Bedford, died on May 26, 2014 at Our Lady of the Valley in Roanoke. Born July 31, 1925 in Atkins, Virginia, he was the son of the late Ephraim Henry Phillippe, Jr. and Tressa Katherine (Snavely) Phillippe.

Bud moved to Danville with his family in 1929 and graduated from George Washington High School in 1943. He proudly served his country during World War ll in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. A lifelong learner, Bud received a bachelor of science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1950 and a master’s of science degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of North Carolina in 1970. His work took his family to New Jersey, Wisconsin, California and, in 1964, back to Virginia; he retired from Virginia Chemicals/Hoechst Celanese in Portsmouth in 1988. Bud and his wife moved from Chesapeake to Bedford in 1989 where they enjoyed many years caring for their apple orchard and traveling. He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ann (Luther) Phillippe.

Bud is survived by his three daughters, Ginny Laubinger and her husband Lars of Danville; Susan Stewart and her husband Bob of Boardman, Ohio and Peggy Ireson and her husband Bob of Moneta; five grandchildren, Stephen and wife Michelle, Jared, Emily, Michael and Laura; one grandson, Lane; a sister, Elsie Whitfield of Ringgold; and two nieces and a nephew, their spouses and children.

The family would like to thank the many friends, neighbors and helpers who enabled Bud to live independently in his home until his death. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Bud’s name to FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway. A celebration of Bud’s life will be conducted on June 28th at 2pm at Tharp Funeral Chapel in Bedford.
