Ernest Frederick Sommer, 90, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, February 24, 2016.
Ernest Frederick Sommer claimed the Promise of the Resurrection on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. God blessed him as a generous, kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. He resided in Lynchburg for the past 40 years. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Philipp and Wilhelmine Sommer; his brother, Robert E. Sommer; his daughter-in-law, Carolyn Lewis Sommer.
Ernie married his precious and beloved wife, Jackie, in November 1948 and was so joyful to have spent 67 years with her. He is also, survived by his six children and their spouses; Fredericka (Fredi) Branch, Heidi and David Hickman, Ernie, Jr., Johanna and Richard Rawls, Gretchen, Will and Cheryl Sommer. Ernie had eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Ernie retired from the U.S. Army Reserves and from Nationwide Insurance Company. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and charter member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
A Life Celebration Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 Roundelay Road, Lynchburg, Va., 24502 on Thursday, March 3, 2016 with visitation at 11 a.m. and Mass at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be in the church Columbarium.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
