Although Estelle\"™s beautiful spirit remained strong to the end, her body was badly broken and she longed to join her husband of 64 years who passed away just over a year ago. On March 19, God lifted her beautiful spirit from that broken body to join Hoppy in their Heavenly home.
Estelle was born in Lynchburg on February 5, 1925, a daughter of the late Harry N. Lowe Sr. and Susie Florence Maupin Lowe. She met her future husband Kenneth (Hoppy), of Fisk, MO, while he was stationed in Norfolk, VA with the U.S. Navy. They had their first date while Kenneth was on a weekend furlough with a friend from Lynchburg. It was love at first sight (they were smitten with each other!) and they married June 15, 1945.
An accomplished bookkeeper, seamstress and homemaker, Estelle addressed her life head on with a passion for excellence. She was the epitome of the term \"Matriarch\", and truly the corner stone of her family.
Estelle Hopkins, an exceptional woman, was an outstanding example of true loveliness. Life afforded those who were close to Estelle an extraordinary education in love, tenacity, fortitude, acceptance, courage, support, and, once again, love. Daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and neighbor, Estelle left an indelible mark on us all. Her gifts were many.
And now for the rest of the story:
\"¦\"¦had the most captivatingly beautiful sea-glass green eyes (all the cats in the neighborhood were envious!); in the \"Keep the City Clean\" campaign, Estelle\"™s block of \"C\" street rated #1 (she could swing a mean broom!); Estelle never, EVER ran out of Clorox; EVERY holiday required zillions of decorations (repacking those boxes was a chore!); she never reconciled that her beloved cat, Pretty Boy, was in fact a GIRL; her \"3 Year Old\" doll, originally a Christmas gift for her youngest daughter, was retained by Estelle and more handsomely clothed than any other family member (much to the chagrin of the original owner \"" Cindi Kay!); for some women, it is diamonds and furs – for Estelle, it was 6 oz Cokes and lengthy telephone conversations; being a great cook, she never underestimated the value of butter, butter, butter\"¦;
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Leola L. Parrish; brothers, Harry N. Lowe Jr. and Edward G. Lowe.
She is survived by her brother, James K. Lowe Sr.; two daughters, Sandra H. Wood and Cynthia (Cindi) H. Mitchell; son, Kenneth Hopkins Jr.; grandchildren, John (Trey) R. Wood III, Adam K. Wood (Lynne), Douglas F. Pendleton II, Kelly P. Houser (Justin), Lyndsy H. Funk (John); great-grandchildren, Megan Wood, Kimberly Wood, Renie Wood, Adam Wood II, Shea Pendleton, Jesse Hughes, Kirsty Hughes, Jeremy Hughes, Kaitlyn Hughes, Kodi Houser, Scarlett Funk, and Ama Funk.
Estelle Virginia Lowe Hopkins was an outstanding example of how a strong soul can overcome overwhelming obstacles to leave a fingerprint representing the greatest gift that can be bestowed on any\"¦Grace from God\"™s abiding love.
A memorial service celebrating Estelle\"™s life will be held on Saturday, March 27, at 11:00 a.m., in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton officiating.
The family would like to express heartfelt love and gratitude to the staff at Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center who provided outstanding care to Estelle, especially Dr. Christopher Webb, Martha Hager, Carolyn Harris, Nancy Overstreet and the angels on \"West Wing\", whose diligent dedication to their profession proves that they deserve their wings and halo.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you LIVE \"" LAUGH \"" LOVE\"¦and the greatest of these is LOVE.
